Call for Papers
Joint Conference: Canadian Society for the History of Medicine (CSHM) and Canadian Association for the History of Nursing (CAHN)
May 27-29, 2023
The CSHM and CAHN will hold their joint annual meeting in person at York University on May 27-29, 2023.
Reflecting the Congress 2023 theme, our theme for this year?s conference will be ?Reckoning and Re-Imagining Health Histories.? The current crisis in health care and the inequalities exposed by the pandemic show the urgent need to reckon with medicine and nursing?s historic roles in reinforcing disparities and engage with calls to decolonize health care histories. We particularly invite papers that reckon with the segmentation of nursing history/medical history/health history and seek to broaden our reach and reimagine the direction of our fields. We welcome papers from a diversity of geographical areas and time frames.
The CSHM and CAHN invite individuals and teams of scholars to submit proposals for, papers, panels, or other forms of knowledge sharing relevant to individual scholars? cultural and disciplinary perspectives. Abstracts for individual papers should be maximum 250 words, and abstracts for panels should include a 250-word rationale for the panel, a list of panel participants, and a short (max 200 words) description for each paper. Round tables should include a rationale (250 words), and list of round table participants. (Each round table participant should not include a separate statement relating to their contribution, since this is a round table, and the discussion is expected to be open format.)
For other forms of knowledge sharing, the program committee requests brief descriptions of the format that are sufficient to allow the committee to decide on relevance for the conference and to determine where and how to schedule these activities. Community-based presentations are welcomed and proposals outside of the theme will be considered.
All abstract submissions (individual, panel, roundtable, knowledge sharing, community-based) should also include three keywords to help categorize the abstract.
Normally, conference sessions will be comprised of three or four papers of 15 – 20 minutes in length, with questions for each paper following immediately afterwards. Depending on the form of knowledge sharing taking place, modifications to this format are welcome.
Please submit your abstracts to [email protected] by December 15, 2022.
Accepted participants will be notified by early February of the committee?s decision. At this time a French/English translation of your abstract will be required. We will have travel funds available for student presenters. Please check cshm-schm.ca/ for further information in early 2023.
A reminder that all presenters must be members of CSHM or CAHN.
