Public Histories of Health and Medicine
June 4-6, 2022
The Canadian Society for the History of Medicine meeting will be held virtually June 4-6, 2022. The theme of this year’s conference is Public Histories of Health and Medicine.
The year 2022 marks a century since the release of Dr. Peter Bryce’s “The Story of a National Crime” exposing the disease, deaths, and overcrowding Indigenous children experienced at the underfunded Residential Schools. Bryce’s report furthermore revealed the role of the Canadian state in silencing Indigenous health problems. The importance of Bryce’s work is made visible with the 2021 national and international media coverage of unmarked children’s graves at Residential School sites in Canada. The legacy of Bryce’s report epitomizes the importance of historians of health and medicine in contributing to the public discourse on Indigenous-state relations in Canada.
The 2022 Canadian Society for the History of Medicine Programme Committee invites papers that demonstrate the disciplinary or interdisciplinary role the history of medicine contributes to exposing the effect of injustices, racism, discrimination on health and disease inequities in the past. Papers are also welcome that address the legacy of the history of medicine in contributing to a national dialogue on the importance of historical perspectives in health studies. Community-based presentations are welcomed and proposals outside of the theme will be considered.
The virtual conference will consist of 75-minute panels comprising of four ten-minute presentations, remarks from a commentator, and a question period. Presenters will be required to submit presentation drafts to their panel commentator at least two weeks prior to the conference. There will be no fee for the conference, but presenters are required to be members of the CSHM. Interested presenters are invited to submit abstracts of no more than 150 words as well as a one-page CV to Dr. Darrel Manitowabi at [email protected] by February 4, 2022. The Programme Committee welcomes individual submissions and organized panels of four related papers and a commentator, and this will require a panel proposal up to 200 words with an abstract and one page CV of each presenter.
The Committee will notify applicants of its decision by February 21, 2022. Accepted presentations require the provision of French and English versions of abstracts for inclusion in the bilingual Programme Book. Questions can be addressed to the Programme Committee Chair: Dr. Darrel Manitowabi, Northern Ontario School of Medicine ([email protected]).
