Dr. Charles Peter Warren was the inaugural Chair of the Royal College?s History & Heritage Advisory Committee, and provided leadership to the Royal College?s history and heritage activities until his sudden passing in May 2011. This travelling scholarship was introduced in 2013 in recognition of Dr. Warren?s significant contributions to the History of Medicine in Canada.

Objective
To encourage post-graduate trainees in medicine to undertake research projects in the history of specialty medicine, the history of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and/or the history of Post-Graduate Medical Education in Canada; and to encourage the use of the Royal College historical and archival collections as a resource for scholarly work within the field of the history of medicine.

Eligibility
The Peter Warren Travelling Scholarship is open to applicants from all medical and surgical disciplines recognized by the Royal College. Applicants must be post-graduate trainees in a Canadian medical school who are undertaking a clearly defined project in the history of specialty medicine including but not limited to the history of the Royal College and/or the history of Post-Graduate Medical Education in Canada.

All supporting documents must be submitted in one (1) PDF document, which follows the sequence of the application form.

Budget and justification must be provided in a one-page outline. Budgets should not include salary or honoraria for investigators; however, budgets may include requests to defray the costs for travel, accommodation and meals for investigators to conduct research and/or disseminate the project findings.

Selection
The selection is based on the overall merit of the application and the degree to which the proposal meets the described objectives. Specifically, the Awards Committee assesses:

the applicant’s education and experience;
the applicant?s qualifications related to the topic;
the benefits to the individual and to the profession;
the quality of the research project to be undertaken.

Preference shall be given to post-graduate medical trainees who plan to travel to Ottawa to undertake research on an aspect of the history of specialty medicine / specialty medical education using the resources of the Royal College Archives and/or other Royal College historical collections. Preference shall be given to individuals who are Resident Affiliates of the Royal College.

The History & Heritage Advisory Committee of the Royal College selects the recipient(s).

One or more grants will be awarded each year. Only one grant per year per principal investigator will be awarded. The number of grants per year shall be determined by the History & Heritage Advisory Committee based on available funds.

Award
Up to $1,500, based on the budget provided with the application package. Funds must be utilized within 18 months of the initial disbursement.

An amount equivalent to 75% of the grant will be disbursed on commencement, and 25% on receipt of a final report at project completion. The final report must be sent to the Grant Administrator, RCPSC. The final report shall be shared with the Royal College?s History & Heritage Advisory Committee and recipient names shall be listed in the Awards section of the Royal College website.

Closing date
5 p.m. (EDT) Monday September 30, 2013. Late applications will not be considered. Adjudication will take place in November, and funds will be disbursed in early 2014.
