Chaque année, la SCHM invite un·e historien·ne de la médecine reconnu·e pour présenter son champ d’expertise au congrès. Les présentations reflètent les intérêts et questionnements actuels en histoire de la médecine et de la santé. Elles traitent aussi des grandes contributions au domaine au Canada.
Offert pour la première fois au début des années 1980, le séminaire Paterson rendait alors hommage à Jason Hannah, médecin et fondateur d’Associated Medical Services Inc. et du Hannah Institute for the History of Medicine. En 1987, le conseil d’administration d’AMS a décidé de renommer le séminaire en l’honneur du médecin G. R. « Pat » Paterson, fondateur et directeur général de l’institut Hannah, qui quittait ses fonctions.
