Joint conference: Canadian Society for the History of Medicine (CSHM) and Canadian Association for the History of Nursing (CAHN)
George Brown College, Toronto, ON, Canada
Dates: 31 May to 2 June 2025
The Canadian Society for the History of Medicine (CSHM) will mark its 75th anniversary in 2025 and will hold a joint meeting with the Canadian Association for the History of Nursing (CAHN). The dates are 31 May to 2 June 2025. The meeting will take place at Toronto’s George Brown College, located on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and other Indigenous peoples.
The Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities has not set a conference theme, so this is an open call. We encourage submissions from a variety of perspectives and historical methodologies. In keeping with the longstanding practices of these two national societies, we also welcome papers from different geographical areas and various periods of history. We especially welcome submissions from graduate students and travel funds are available for students.
The CSHM and CAHN invite both individual papers and submissions for full sessions. Abstracts may be submitted in French or English and should be a maximum of 250 words. Proposals for full panels are encouraged, and abstracts for full sessions must include a list of panel participants, and a description for individual papers (not exceeding 200 words), and a 250-word rationale for the panel, We also welcome round tables and other formats. In these cases, the proposal should include a list of round table participants and a rationale for the overall session. Abstract submissions should also include three keywords to help with the conference planning.
Brief biographies (150 words) should also be submitted for all potential participants, regardless of whether the proposal is for an individual paper, a complete session, or a round table. All presenters must be members of the CSHM or CAHN, except for participants in the joint sessions with the Canadian Historical Association.
The conference is structured to permit three or four papers of between 15 and 20 minutes, with questions for individual papers following each paper. In the case of full panels or round tables, this format can be modified at the request of the participants. Such requests should be indicated at the time of the abstract submission.
This meeting will also include several joint sessions with the Canadian Historical Association (CHA) on the final day of the conference. This is intended to allow members from all the societies to engage with one another on topics of shared interest. Proposals to participate in the joint session should indicate this in a proposal for a session or a roundtable, and this must be submitted to both organizations. The CHA has posted their CFP https://event.fourwaves.com/chashc2025/pages with a closing date of October 15, 2024. Individual papers will not be considered for the joint sessions.
Please submit your abstracts to peter.twohig@smu.ca by 1 November 2024. The program committee will notify participants in January 2025 to facilitate conference planning. Accepted papers, panels, and round tables will have to provide a translation of their abstract to the program committee.
